In 2024, Rewilding Europe stepped up its efforts to advance nature recovery across Europe, in collaboration with partners, stakeholders, and supporters. Our latest Annual Review, which celebrates a highly rewarding year of progress, shows how rewilding is harnessing the power of nature to deliver a European continent where people and nature thrive together.

Rewilding Europe’s latest Annual Review shows how and why we are working hard to demonstrate and catalyse rewilding on an ever-larger scale.

    A wonderful year

Rewilding Europe works to scale up rewilding across Europe, carrying out impactful actions that deliver tangible benefits for people, nature, and climate. From restoring key habitats to empowering local communities, our rewilding efforts – and those of our partners – are delivering positive change, fostering an environment where people and wild nature can thrive alongside each other and offering hope for a brighter future for all.

Today, we are delighted to present our Annual Review for 2024 – the thirteenth year since our foundation – which shows how and why we are working hard to demonstrate and catalyse rewilding on an ever-larger scale, both inside and outside our rewilding landscapes. As we stepped up efforts to advance nature recovery, our wide-ranging achievements were made possible by the hard work, passion, and dedication of our pan-European team, which now boasts well over 200 people.

    Harnessing the power of nature

With a hopeful and profound conservation narrative, rewilding demonstrates that there is every reason to harness “natural intelligence” to restore nature at scale, weaving it into the fabric of our lives – just as artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly commonplace in today’s society.

“For millions of years, natural processes have shaped and sustained life on Earth,” says Rewilding Europe Executive Director Frans Schepers. “Just as artificial intelligence is being employed to make everything work smarter, faster, and more intuitively, rewilding puts natural intelligence to work, making large-scale nature recovery feasible and sustainable.

“Our latest Annual Review is filled with examples of how Rewilding Europe leverages the power and resilience of nature to breathe new life into landscapes and deliver diverse benefits to people – from restoring the natural flow of water through rivers and wetlands to reduce the scale and impact of floods and droughts, to supporting the comeback of influential wildlife species such as European bison, semi-wild horses, and vultures, which can enhance the health, resilience, and value of entire ecosystems. The amazing ability of nature to restore itself, when given time, space, and the right conditions, is what empowers and inspires us.”
