Rewilding Europe is thrilled to announce that the annual support it receives from the Dutch Postcode Lottery has just increased to 1 million euros. This critical funding will enable us to continue our efforts to scale up rewilding and the wide-ranging benefits it delivers to nature and people across the continent.

    Enabling game-changing impact

Rewilding Europe has been a recipient of annual awards from the Dutch Postcode Lottery since 2017. This essential funding is enabling us to deliver transformative impact for nature and people across the continent, as we work to amplify and accelerate rewilding. In the past, the lottery has also provided extra funding for Rewilding Europe Capital, Rewilding Europe’s enterprise loan facility, and our European Wildlife Comeback Fund, which supports the reintroduction of keystone species by rewilding initiatives across Europe.

We are excited to announce that from this year our lottery funding has been increased from 900,000 to 1 million euros, and are hugely grateful for the continued trust placed in us to realise a wilder Europe that benefits all.

“Everyone at Rewilding Europe is incredibly thankful to the lottery for this generous increase in their support, which has been invaluable to our growth and the work we carry out,” says Rewilding Europe Executive Director Frans Schepers, who recently took receipt of this year’s lottery cheque at our Wild Quarters home office. “If we are serious about restoring nature at scale, rewilding has the potential to become a gold standard for the ecological recovery of European landscapes, and beyond. Moving forwards, lottery funding will enable us to realise that potential by taking rewilding to the next level.”

A new conservation vision for Europe

If we want to restore nature at scale in Europe, as we have committed to at EU and global policy levels, the only way to achieve this is through rewilding. As a progressive approach to nature recovery, rewilding is one of the best ways of simultaneously addressing climate change, reversing biodiversity decline, and delivering a more liveable and prosperous world.

As the efforts of Rewilding Europe and other rewilding initiatives are showing, allowing nature to recover breathes new life into landscapes and generates a whole range of benefits, with healthier, more functional ecosystems and thriving wildlife populations helping to deliver benefits such as cleaner air, fresher water, enhanced carbon uptake and storage, and more sustainable jobs, income, and economies.

“Rewilding Europe is showcasing a new conservation vision for Europe, where people can enjoy spectacular wild natural areas, providing benefits to both nature and people,” says Jonne Arnoldussen, Managing Director of the Dutch Postcode Lottery. “We are proud that we are able to support this important work thanks to our many lottery participants, and look forward to continuing our cooperation.”

    For people and nature

Every year millions of euros in charitable donations are made possible by the 3 million people who participate in the Dutch Postcode Lottery (a minimum of 40% of every ticket goes to charity). The lottery, which has been raising funds since 1989 to support organisations working towards a fairer and greener world, is the biggest charity lottery in the Netherlands, having now disbursed over 8.3 billion euros to beneficiaries since foundation. Rewilding Europe is extremely grateful to the Dutch Postcode Lottery, and all its participants, for their longstanding and highly valued support.

As Rewilding Europe works to make our continent a wilder place, we are always looking to collaborate with conservation organisations, public or private institutions, foundations, companies, and private individuals. From more wildlife to wilder lives, let’s supercharge nature recovery in Europe together. If you are inspired by the thought of a wilder, better tomorrow, join us today.
